Transmedia and interactive storytelling between young adult books and role-playing games

It is a fallacy to believe that books will disappear with the increasing success of the video game. There are elements of action that are not really suited to a digital narrative medium. Then again, digital games give you completely new possibilities for determining the fate of characters, experiencing places in a new way and discovering content for yourself. Ideally, both digital and non-digital mediums complement each other anyway – in other words, “transmedia storytelling”. We ask how stories are told in young adult literature and digital games and what hybrid forms are possible. What challenges and opportunities are offered for authors who want to work in transmedia?  How can young readers be reached with “gamified” media usage habits?
